72 HOURS IN BUDAPEST FOR MICE EVENTS

At Make Happen we’re always looking into new and unique destinations for our clients, often pitching and producing conferences, incentives and exhibitions. We always like to move away from the ordinary and challenge our clients to do something new. One of the destinations that really caught our attention this month is Budapest, we spent 72 hours there and have compiled our insights/tips for you.

Budapest might seem like an unusual MICE destination upon first glance. In fact, it’s not a destination we hear being talked about regularly. With its rich culture, quirky experiences and quick flight time it’s ideal for a large congress or a small meetings retreat.

Added Value/easy logistics

Budapest’s infrastructure is what makes the city so accessible for the MICE industry, both sides of the river Danube (Buda and Pest) offer easy proximity to the cities major attractions and sights. Many destinations are a short walk which saves on time, expense and logistics. If you’re looking for alternative ways to transport your group there are many rail links, trams and private hire services on offer.

Hotels

Accommodation-wise, the hotels are really versatile and are open to cater to whatever type of event you require. We suggest checking out booking sites with peer reviews/client testimonials as they do help you get a feel for what’s on offer.

There’s a wide choice of hotels in and around the Danube, whether you’re looking for a modest apartment or a lavish, 5-star on the river hotel. We recommend Baltazar Budapest for a small incentive group – bringing the bohemian vibe to the city.

Meeting space

Budapest is home to the largest multi-functional event space in Hungary, HungExpo can be the perfect partner. The main halls can cater for up to 15,000 pax or can be divided into smaller spaces using soundproof removable walls. Perhaps it’s most appealing feature is their 36-hectare landscape, a venue surrounded by a green landscape.

For a more unusual option, the Great Market Hall can become your attendees behind the scenes experience into Budapest. For those delegates wishing to experience the full spectrum of Hungarian food and culture, the market can be exclusively hired. Local vendors/stalls can be also hired/opened at night for your guests to explore.

Dining Options

Budapest is home to four Michelin star restaurants and a range of hidden gems all over the city. If you’re looking for something traditional, start the evening off with a food tour around the markets followed by a private cooking lesson. Delegates can pick their own ingredients and create a menu based on their likes/dislikes. Alternatively, enjoy a tour of a family-run vineyard and dine in a wine cellar.

If you’re looking for something to do later in the evening, the ‘Ruin Bars’ within the Jewish Quarter are a way to meet locals and other fellow travellers. Located in abandoned warehouses and factories that have been given a new lease of life. Now home to Hungarian hipsters, these bars serve drinks in quirky, offbeat settings often with live music.

Experiences

For those looking to plan a short incentive trip, Budapest has a variety of activities on offer.

  1. Szimpla Market – Budapest’s most famous ‘ruin bar’ turns into a local farmers market on a Sunday, an eclectic collection of people selling art, food and wine. A great way to see Budapest from a locals viewpoint.
  2. Street Art Tour – an alternative way to see a city (and my favourite).
  3. Think Big! – for larger groups, experience a full symphonic orchestra at your own private concert or have exclusive access to one of the cities famous thermal baths.

With a forever increasing arts and culture offering, you can personalise your trip however you desire.
