Japan – An Incredible Destination for Meetings, Incentives & Conferences

Hi everyone. It’s Cata from Make Happen here. I just came back from a great trip to Tokyo and Okinawa, visiting venues and local suppliers for our clients and I thought I’d share with you a few of my favourite things whilst there.

TOKYO
Accessing this buzzing and cosmopolitan city nowadays is quicker and more affordable than ever. And worth it as well. With direct flights from most countries in Europe, if you’re after fascinating culture, memorable experiences and efficient delivery, Tokyo is an excellent destination for corporate events.

The visual impact of the city is a great start: you instantly know you’ve arrived to the land of samurai, origami, incredible tech, kabuki, tempura and tea ceremonies (and these are just a few of the many wonderful things this destination has to offer).

Accommodation-wise, there’s a big range of hotels to choose from. Boutique hotels for small groups include, Hotel Koe Tokyo, Hyatt Centric Ginza, Hoshinoya Hotel and Hotel Niwa Tokyo (the latter two with a modern Japanese style). For larger groups, there’s incredible 5 star hotels such as The Peninsula, Hotel Chinzanso, Prince Hotels and the iconic Park Hyatt Tokyo if you’d like a Lost In Translation experience and some of the best views of the city. These also host large banqueting spaces and all you need for self-contained conferences.

The cultural and memorable experiences that groups can take part of are endless. I personally experienced Hokusai Yoga, Edokiriko, a Koto performance, a Rickshaw tour around the Marunouchi area and a Tea Ceremony, to name a few. There is also incredible event spaces, that can be exclusively hired for a reception, dinner or launch such as Happoen, Nippon Gallery Tabido and Warehouse Terrada.

And then there’s the food, the exquisite Japanese food. From ramen, to tempura, to sushi, sashimi, pickles and more, this place is absolute heaven for foodies.

All in all, Tokyo excels on quality, choice, efficient delivery and cultural richness, enabling delegates and colleagues to create memories and leave your corporate event feeling positive and full of energy.

OKINAWA
The prefecture of Okinawa is a paradise just a stone-throw away from Tokyo – perfect if you’d like to combine city and coast, as part of your corporate event.

With daily, direct flights from Tokyo, this destination serves as a great contrast to the capital and allows event participants to build bonds, whilst surrounded by lush nature.

The Okinawa Prefecture comprises of a main island and more than 150 smaller islands, a lot of which are very well connected through flights and ferries. I got to explore the main island, Ishigaki and Taketomi.

People in Okinawa have one of the highest life expectancies in the world. During my time there, some of the people I met explained that the secret is in 5 key ingredients: (1) sense of purpose, (2) community spirit, (3) singing & dancing, (4) exercise & good eating and (5) contact with nature. You’ll be pleased to know that I got to witness and experience all 5 of them during my short time there.

The pride and passion that people from Okinawa feel for their hometown is truly unique. I think their 5 key pillars are a great reference not only on a personal level but also as values in the workplace, making Okinawa a fantastic destination to inspire and re-energise your team.

With white sand beaches, snorkelling, breath-taking coral reefs, sea turtles, dinners inside caves, pottery studios, water buffalos and more, you won’t be short of excitement in Okinawa.

There’s fantastic accommodation across the Prefecture with hotels such as The Ritz-Carlton and Double Tree by Hilton in the main island and ANA Intercontinental in Ishigaki, as well as many 5* resorts opening within the next year, such as IRAPH SUI, opening Nov 2018 in the island of Miyako.

KONNICHIWA TRANSFORMATIONAL TRAVEL
It’s important that conferences and incentive events these days have aims, meaning and outputs.

Transformational travel is not just a trend, it is a tool to help businesses to find solutions to challenges, build strong relationships and ultimately thrive through it’s people. Japan definitely ticks all boxes to make transformational travel happen.
